Time For Your Annual Data Hygiene Cleanse!

See Article Here

No one is immune from cyber criminals, including the Girl Scouts! The attached article talks about the Girl Scouts of Orange County California being the victim of a cyber breach. In a letter posted here the Girl Scouts describe an incident where someone got a hold of the email account related to troop travel and sent out a number of emails. In this account there was data dated back to 2014 that could have contained members’ names, birth dates, home addresses, insurance policy numbers and health history.

One of my more pressing question is why do we continue to use email as a storage solution? Deleting old data should be a regular practice, if you don’t need it, DELETE IT! I promise it will be ok. Unfortunately, that is not the case, we store email forever, just in case. I am guilty of this too!

If you have thousands of emails sitting in your email account (this includes the deleted and sent items folders too), then you probably have some very sensitive information just sitting there, waiting for someone to find it. Those emails can contain a plethora of personal information about you and your family. In my own case there is tax information, mortgage applications and other information, etc. the list can go on and on. The only reason we store all this information, is because we can, if we are forced to get rid of it, we would.

We are coming up on the holiday season and a lot of folks put on extra weight during this time, but let’s try a data hygiene cleanse and lose some of our digital footprint weight by purging old emails. Consider it one guaranteed way to lose weight this season! Happy deleting.
