AI and Ethics in the law
As we now consider using artificial intelligence (AI) in legal adjudications it begs the question of various biases that may be built into these AI systems. Many of the individuals programming these technologies are white males, and their programming is skewed to their experiences. This of course can be dangerous in a society as diverse as ours, differences in sex, religion, culture, race, sexual orientation, etc. exist and these differences must have a voice when programming AI technology. We have already seen, through the 2016 Investigation by ProPublica, machine learning biases in sentencing. I believe it is imperative that AI firms be mindful of these potential biases and ensure diverse teams are involved in the programming process.
