It’s a difficult balance…. or maybe just take a stand!
Facebook took the unprecedented move of banning some governmental officials from Myanmar based on their posts. I do not profess to know how complicated it is run a social media platform, I use some platforms both professionally and personally, but to run it, wow, not something I can wrap my head around. However, social media companies have been allowed to grow organically since the beginning. What happens when you let a child grow up without rules or boundaries? You may get an out of control teenager that feels they can do anything they want without punishment. Now at 14 years old, Facebook was first launched in 2004, it seems they want to add a layer of morality and/or corporate values that may not have existed before. It is painful to watch actually, trying to reign in a unruly teenager, but it is for the best. I think it may be long overdue that social media companies, like Facebook, take a hard look at their corporate identity and take a stand on the type of adult they want to be.
